Paralysis compensation – who can claim?

You could be entitled to paralysis compensation where your injury is linked to circumstances such as medical negligence, a violent attack, or any catastrophic injury caused by an accident that was not your fault. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to make a claim, speak to us today for free advice.

Types of paralysis

  • Monoplegia – single limb paralysis
  • Paraplegia – paralysis of both legs (may include lower body)
  • Tetraplegia (quadriplegia) – paralysis of both arms and both legs
  • Hemiplegia – paralysis of one arm and one leg on the same side of the body

Causes

Paralysis results from damage to the nerves. This could mean damage to the nerves in the muscles, or damage to the nerves in the spinal cord. Where the spinal cord is injured, you may experience partial or full paralysis in the muscles below the level of the injury.

Common causes of paralysis include:

Trauma

Head, neck, and spinal injuries may lead to full body or partial paralysis. These types of injuries most commonly result from trauma – examples include a fall from height and road traffic accidents.

Hypoxia at birth

Hypoxia occurs where the body does not receive a sufficient oxygen supply. There is an increased risk of hypoxia in children born pre-term, as the lungs may not yet be fully developed.

Medical negligence

Medical negligence could result in paralysis under many circumstances. For example, the late diagnosis or misdiagnosis of a spinal tumour could cause paralysis, as well as a mistake made during surgery.
