Types of spinal cord injury

Your spinal cord injury may be classified as being complete or incomplete:

  • Complete injury – paralysis below the level of the injury
  • Incomplete injury – limited motor function below the level of the injury

Regions of the spine:

Cervical spine (the neck)

A complete spinal injury in this region may result in a full body paralysis. Where your cervical spine injury is incomplete, you may experience weakness or reduced motor function in the body and limbs.

Thoracic spine (upper back)

A complete spinal injury in this region may result in paralysis in the body and legs. Where your thoracic injury is incomplete, you may experience weakness in the body and legs. The arms are typically not affected.

Lumbar spine (lower back)

A complete spinal injury in this region may result in paralysis in the lower body and legs. Where your lumbar injury is incomplete, you may experience reduced bowel control and weakness in the legs.

Sacral spine (base of the spine)

A spinal injury in this region may result in paralysis in the hips and legs. Where your sacral spine injury is incomplete, you may experience reduced motor function particularly in the lower legs and feet.

Depending on the details of your spinal injury, we may be able to help you to access many different types of specialist medical care and support as part of your claim.
