Needlestick injury – are you at risk?

Depending on the nature of your duties in the workplace, you may be at increased risk of coming into contact with skin piercing objects. However, even in public places there may be a significant risk of a needlestick injury or sharps injury.

Public places

You may be at increased risk of a needlestick injury in any of the following public places:

  • Parks
  • Beaches
  • Public toilets
  • Public transport
  • Night clubs & bars

Workplace

You may be at increased risk of a needlestick injury in any of the following professions:

  • Dentists
  • Paramedics
  • Tattoo artists
  • Waste collectors
  • Doctors & nursing staff

Needlestick injury & blood-borne viruses

A needlestick injury will typically involve localised pain and swelling. However, the main concern is the potential for contracting a blood-borne virus. There are three major blood-borne pathogens associated with needlestick injuries:

Hepatitis B

  • Transmitted through some bodily fluids, including blood
  • The virus may continue to live outside the host body for up to a week
  • Long term, the virus is linked to diseases of the liver (including liver cirrhosis)

Hepatitis C

  • Transmitted through some bodily fluids, including blood
  • The virus can survive outside the host body for between 16 hours and 4 days
  • Symptoms include tiredness, muscle pain, and liver inflammation or liver damage

HIV

  • Transmitted through some bodily fluids, including blood
  • The virus is not capable of surviving for a significant period outside the host body
  • HIV destroys the immune system over 9-11 years (at this point, HIV becomes AIDS)
