Man Found Guilty of 47 Attacks on Females as Young as 13

A man in his forties who carried out a series of attacks on females in and around Kent has been handed a life sentence.

47 Attacks

John Guscott, 43, has this week been convicted of 47 attacks on numerous girls and women and is due to serve a minimum of twelve and a half years without parole.

Targeting women that were walking on their own in the areas of Medway, Sittingbourne and Whitstable, Guscott carried out his attacks over a ten month period between January and November 2014.

According to police detectives, around half of the attacks carried out by Guscott were sexual assaults. Around 12 attacks were robberies and the rest were assaults; he also stole mobile phones on several occasions, for his personal use. All of Guscott’s victims were females aged 13 to 88.

Some of the women Guscott attacked claimed their attacker wore a single glove, numerous pairs of which were found after a search of his property. Police also found hoodies and a yellow t-shirt that had previously been described by various victims and witnesses to the attacks.

Sentencing

Following a five week trial at Maidstone Crown Court, John Guscott, of Chatham, was found guilty of 37 counts of sexual assault, assault and robbery. The 43 year old admitted to committing a further ten offences at a second hearing. Along with his sentence of life with a minimum of twelve and a half years without parole, a judge ordered Guscott to sign the sex offender’s register for life.

Detective Inspector Richard Vickery said after the hearing:

“Guscott was relentless in his offending and left very little for investigating officers to work with in terms of their inquiries. His attacks were random in nature, and in the times and locations they took place, and he was forensically aware as he often wore gloves and balaclavas.”
