The Charities which will benefit from funds raised are below:
Hope & Homes for Children – This UK charity provides support for children orphaned by war or disaster in Eastern Europe and Africa. The Foundation has supported Hope and Homes for Children for the last ten years and our funding, together with money raised by individuals and within the Company’s offices, resulted in more than £3 million being given to HHC by the end of 2008.
Teenage Cancer Trust – The Foundation has donated over £440,000 to fund patient technology in three of Teenage Cancer Trust’s specialist units – Birmingham Children’s Hospital, St. James’s in Leeds and The Royal Marsden in Surrey. Cancer in teenagers has a distinctive pattern, they can contract some of the most aggressive cancers which are often made worse by growth spurts. The 6 teenagers diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK need specialist care because of the rarity of the tumours they get and the particular psychological and social problems they experience.
CIDA, a University in South Africa run by the students, has implemented formal programmes which require students to give back to their home community. The Foundation and individual Partners and employees have sponsored 99 students on three year degree courses.
The Children’s Trust – The Foundation donated £1.2 million to The Children’s Trust to fund the building of a specialist Hydrotherapy Centre for children with acquired brain injuries. The centre provides water therapy to relieve pain and help children improve their mobility, posture, balance and co-ordination. The specialist facility will ensure that every one of the 250 children helped by the Trust each year will experience the life changing benefits of Hydrotherapy.
Laureus Sports Foundation – Urban Stars is an inner city multi-sports programme delivered by the Active Communities Network, which uses sports and educational activities to help tackle youth crime and gang violence in inner city areas. They offer kids a fun, safe place to go and help them develop a path that will keep them out of the gangs and back into education, employment, or training.
About St James Place Foundation
St. James’s Place Foundation was formed at the same time as the Company in 1992 and from Day 1 the founding members had a collective desire to give something back to the community.
All Partners and Employees are encouraged to take part in events such as tandem skydiving, triathlons, marathons and Ironman challenges. As well as fundraising events and initiatives, the Foundation has consistently promoted the benefits of Staff and Partners giving by way of a regular monthly gift. Over 80% of the St. James’s Place community give in this way raising in excess of £350,000 each year. This support has made a huge difference to the lives of a large number of vulnerable people and the existence and success of the Foundation has made a significant impact in maintaining the core values and teamwork amongst employees and Partners. We have a strong history of helping children and young people, those whose lives have been adversely affected by disability or illness as well those who are disadvantaged or who have been marginalised. We have helped hundreds of small charities working in the UK, by funding projects that are for the direct benefit of physically disabled children, those suffering from a mental condition, or a life threatening or degenerative illness. We have also made a significant and positive difference to the lives of people who are challenged by the effects of illness through our support of the Hospice movement. As well as the hundreds of smaller one off grants that are made each year, the Foundation has formed longer lasting relationships with a number of leading charities working both in the UK and Overseas, whereby the Foundation has funded various projects over a number of years.
