International Women’s Day – A Chat with Niamh
Ahead of International Women’s Day, we are celebrating some of the women that make Hampson Hughes. Today, we spoke to Niamh Wilson, Associate Solicitor COLP about her journey with Hampson Hughes.
Niamh Wilson – Associate Solicitor:
I am a thirty(ish) old Senior Solicitor and mum to a beautiful little girl. I joined HH in Feb 2012 as a NQ coming up to 1 year qualification not really knowing what to expect as the firm was experiencing rapid growth at that time. Where would I fit in? Within 2 months I was promoted to Assistant Solicitor in a busy multi-track PI department. Thereafter I was given my own team with a turnover of 1 million plus each year and in 2014, I made my way to Head of Department of almost 65 people. Working for a firm this size rather than a large one does lend itself to career progression. I was at the hub of a very thriving and successful RTA Department. Our industry has faced as a series of challenges which caused many difficulties and we face even more reforms so we are constantly evolving for the future which is exciting too.
I had a career break in December 2016 to have my little girl Maeve (which is Irish for ‘cause of great joy’ which she is) and made the return to work post maternity leave in September 2017 taking over a new role in the Compliance Department. As a working mum, the firm has bent over backwards and offered me the right role, hours and flexibility to help me get my work/life balance. I have since moved up to a more Senior Role and act as the Firm’s Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) […..not to mention Data Protection Officer, Health and Safety Officer and all round problem solver!}
I feel very passionately about supporting women in the workplace whilst juggling parenting and work life balance as I know first-hand what parental guilt is like! As an Senior employee, we get the need for a parent-friendly workplace culture which we are striving towards. Having both parents as solicitors, I think Maeve is preparing for a career as a persuasive speaker herself.
When I am not running around after a destructive toddler, I enjoy all things Mrs Hinch related, a lot of Pinterest and some trashy TV!
