Adam Johnson: England Footballer Pleads Guilty
Professional footballer Adam Johnson has today pleaded guilty to one count of grooming and one count of sexual activity with a fifteen year old girl.
Johnson, who currently plays football for Sunderland, also faces two further counts of sexual activity with a child under sixteen.
The sexual offences are alleged to have occurred on a night out in January 2015, taking place in two different locations in County Durham.
All counts relate to one teenage girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
Initially Johnson, who has also played football for Manchester City and Middlesbrough, denied all four charges, however today he changed his plea to guilty for two of the charges against him.
In the wake of his arrest, Johnson was initially suspended by Sunderland, but they later allowed him to return to the club.
Jurors were today sworn in at Bradford Crown Court and were reminded by the judge that they must only consider evidence presented in court.
Judge Jonathon Rose said:
“You may see reference to this in the press but it’s the evidence in court that you will gather,’ he said.
“This defendant has already pleaded guilty to two offences, you will hear more about them in detail when Miss Blackwell opens the case to you on Friday.”
