Delivery Driver Charged with Sexual Assault

A Staffordshire based courier has been charged with sexual assault after he attempted to hug and kiss a woman when delivering a parcel.

Incident

North Staffordshire Magistrates’ Court heard that Barry Weston, of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, knocked on the woman’s door to ask if he could leave a neighbour’s parcel with her.

The 26 year old delivery driver then stepped into her home without permission, threw both arms around her and tried to kiss her more than once. When she managed to push him away, Weston repeatedly asked for the victim’s mobile number.

Prosecutor Sabrina Naz told the court:

“He requested to be kissed several times. She managed to push him away,

“He requested her telephone number. She gave her number to him to pacify him and get rid of him. He immediately sent two texts. She blocked the number and informed the police.”

Sentencing

Weston denied one count of sexual assault; however he was later convicted following a trial at North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

The delivery driver was sentenced to carry out a three-year community order, including a 35-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 100 hours of unpaid work. Weston was also handed a two-year restraining order and ordered to sign to the sex offender register for 5 years. Furthermore, he was ordered to pay £775 costs and a £60 surcharge.

Sentencing Weston, chair of the magistrates Janet Stanyer said the 26 year old had committed a ‘concerning’ offence. She added:

“The circumstances happened when you were just delivering a parcel to a stranger you have never met before and you are still working in that job.”

Weston is still employed by the same courier firm as at the time of attack, the name of which was not disclosed in court, and a spokesperson said he is a ‘trusted and valued member of the team’.
