Types of spinal cord injury

Depending on the severity of your spinal cord injury, you could experience complete or partial paralysis below the level of your injury. There are four types of incomplete spinal cord injury:

Anterior cord syndrome

  • Damage is sustained to the front facing portion of the spinal cord
  • Loss of pain and temperature perception below the level of the injury

Posterior cord syndrome

  • Damage is sustained to the rear portion of the spinal cord
  • Loss of light touch and proprioception below the level of the injury

Central cord syndrome

  • Damage is sustained to the centre of the spinal cord
  • Partial paralysis below the injury, especially in the upper limbs

Brown-Sequard syndrome

  • Damage is sustained to one side of the spinal cord
  • Paralysis on the same side of the body as the lesion. Loss of pain and temperature perception on the opposite side of the body to the lesion.

Following trauma to the spinal cord, a correct diagnosis of the lesion may not be possible for 6-8 weeks. This is because the injury will likely cause spinal shock – a temporary localised swelling that affects the normal function of the motor neurons (carrying signals from the brain) and sensory neurons (carrying signals to the brain).

Spinal cord injury claims – expert advice

Depending on the nature of your injury, we may be able to help you to secure access to expert medical care as part of your claim. Your rehabilitation could include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Psychological therapy

Vocational rehabilitation may also be necessary. This could involve working closely with your employer in making reasonable amendments to the workplace relevant to your circumstances. Home adaptations and mobility equipment are further examples of the options that may be available to you. Our expert team of medical negligence solicitors will also ensure that any loss of earnings (and future earnings) is taken into account where your spinal injury prevents a return to work.
