Holiday to Sonesta Club Hotel Sharm el Sheikh Ruined by Illness

Our travel law team were recently instructed by a client who contracted infective gastroenteritis whilst on holiday in Egypt.

Michael Radcliffe booked a 10 night, all inclusive holiday to visit family and friends staying at the Sonesta Club hotel, Sharm el Sheikh.

At the hotel, Mr Radcliffe noticed evidence of poor food hygiene. Food at the hotel restaurant was reportedly left uncovered for long periods of time, appeared to be reheated and was often served cold.

Mr Radcliffe also reported the smell of sewage around the grounds of the hotel and that eating areas were infested with insects and birds.

During his holiday, Mr Radcliffe became unwell, suffering symptoms such as stomach cramps, severe diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, high temperature and fatigue. He sought medical attention whilst abroad and purchased medication that was recommended.

However after falling ill, Mr Radcliffe claims that not only was his holiday ruined, but so was that of their family and friends.

Liability was initially disputed, however the tour operator was unable to prove their case and later admitted liability.

Our expert Travel Law team secured this client a total of £2,500 in compensation.

Following this successful outcome, Mr Radcliffe commented:

“Hampson Hughes provided a professional, friendly service with no hassle.”

Shiamli Mehta-Cronie, Head of Travel Law here at Hampson Hughes added:

“I am pleased we were able to secure a successful outcome in this case.

“Such cases signify another triumph in the battle against the cost cutting exercises we see from tour operators. It is simply not acceptable to allow them to continue to take money from hard working holiday makers and provide them with sub-standard hygiene practices in return.
