Our Travel Law team were recently instructed by a client who contracted infective gastroenteritis whilst on holiday in Mexico.
Holiday illness symptoms
Our client and her partner booked a 2 week stay at the Riu Palace Playacar Resort in Mexico to celebrate their engagement. A day into the holiday, our client began to suffer holiday illness symptoms including vomiting, high temperature, as well as suffering from nausea and fatigue. A doctor was called out and our client was prescribed medication and given an injection to help relieve her symptoms.
Poor food hygiene standards
According to our client, the hygiene at the hotel was very poor, particularly in relation to the food.
Our client reports: The smell of sewage around the hotel and suspects waste water was sprayed on the greenery around the hotel. Food was undercooked in hotel restaurant. Food was not served at the right temperature. Food appeared reheated. Food was left out for long periods of time. Staff members did not wear gloves when handling the food.
Our expert Travel Law team secured this client £3,500.00 compensation.
Shiamli Mehta-Cronie, Head of Travel Law here at Hampson Hughes, said:
“I am pleased we were able to secure a successful outcome in this case. Everyday we are the lawyers of choice for hundreds of holidaymakers who have been unfortunate enough to fall ill whilst on holiday. In most cases the problem is down to insufficient food and hygiene standards at hotels which the tour operator is responsible for.”
